Jonathan Weightman
Jonathan Weightman is from London and of British and Uruguayan parentage. He has lived in Lisbon since 1985. He studied Drama at the University of Manchester and, until he retired, taught English and Theatre Studies at the University of Lisbon.
He was active for many years at the Lisbon Players Theatre as director and actor. His 2002 play, Waking Thoughts, about the queer 18th century writer, collector, traveller and builder William Beckford was performed in London, Edinburgh, Bath and Lisbon.
During lockdown he made two films, We Came to Lisbon (2020), a documentary about visitors to the Portuguese capital and Offstage Stories, about the theatre. He has written the libretto for an opera by Christopher Bochmann about the English queen of Portugal, Philippa of Lancaster. He played the title role in a film of King Lear last year.
